Guria
is located in the western part of Georgia, bordered by the Black Sea. Famous for its music and polyphonic singing, Guria is a region rich in cultural traditions and natural beauty. The countryside is a fetching mosaic of perfumed citrus groves, tea plantations, orchards, grape vines, and cornfields.
Gurian people were very good horse-riders and participated in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
Much of the eastern lowlands of Guria are awash in wetlands and swamp forests including the enchanting Kolkheti National Park. Thick beech, pine and fir forests cloak the mountains.
It is hard to beat the simple pleasure of exploring the pretty Gurian countryside. Discover the unique charms of the Gurian villages, their little wooden houses nestle into the gold and green landscape, corn kernels and pumpkins outside drying in the sun.
For tourists seeking a place to relax and unwind, Guria has a number of popular health resorts, perfect for a rejuvenating break away. Nabeghlavi resort is particularly known for its mineral waters while Ureki is a health resort on the beaches of the Black Sea, famous for its magnetic sand beaches. One of the best mountain resorts in Georgia is in Guria, in the village of Bakhmaro on the Meskheti Mountain range. Located 2,000 meters above sea level, it's known for its unique climate of sea and mountain air.
Ureki
Ureki is a small town in Ozurgeti municipality. It is located on the coast of the Black Sea, 4 m above the sea level, to the north and to the south it is surrounded by the rivers of Sepa and Supsa and to the east surrounded by Tsvermagala mountain.
Ureki is a seaside climatic resort. The climate is wet subtropical here. It is famous for its magnetic sand. Recommended for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Nabeglavi
Nabeglavi- a village in Chokhatauri municipality. This place is a climatic resort and contains mineral water like Borjomi. Recommended as a drinking curative water.
The Palace of Gurieli
The Palace of Gurieli was built in 1873 as a residence and seat of the Princes of Gurieli. In the period of former USSR here was established a museum, which exhibited information about all the regions of Georgia. Later it was transformed into a chapel and then a church, while from 2008 onwards it is a seat of Bishop.
Shemokmedi Monastic Complex
Shemokmedi Monastic Complex of middle centuries is located in Shemokmedi (Georgian word for “creator”) village, on the left side of Bjuji river, 7-8 km away from Ozurgeti town. Shemokmedi Complex consists of three churches; the earliest from the 12th century and two others from 16th (one of them was renovated in 1831).
Jumati Church
Jumati Church of Saint Michael and Gabriel is located in Guria region, Dzirijumati village, 14 km away from Ozurgeti. Date of the foundation is unknown. Church of Jumati is famous for its ancient icons, interesting inscriptions of historical persons and dates. There was also valuable Saint George’s icon which according to scientists was made in XI-XII centuries. However, this icon was stolen in 1921, and yet not found.
Bakhmaro
Bakhmaro-high mountain climatic resort in Chokhatauri, in Bakhvisckali river’s ravine. A territory of Bakhmaro presents a cave surrendered by evergreen fir trees. Every year on 19th August for Periscvaleba (Transfiguration of Jesus) celebration takes a place horseracing.
Paliastomi lake
populations of fish disappeared. In spite of this, even today the Lake is a habitat of such rare species of the Georgian fish fauna as pike perch and black catfish. There is a lot of pickerel, bream, common carp, European club and others. Any person can go fishing on the Lake with a special permit of Park Administration. Paliastomi is a natural habitat for lots of birds. Wild swans, brown ducks, various species of wild ducks – mallards, cormorants, cranes, herons, purple swamphen, marshland whitethroat eagle made here their nests… Bird migration line crosses the Lake, therefore with approaching winter the environs of the Lake are filled with flocks of birds creating unique conditions for birdwatching lovers. Areas surrounding the Lake are favorite places for bird hunters. Hunters and fishermen along with hunting and fishing appliances are advised to bring marshland skis as well.
Egnate Ninoshvili Museum
Egnate Ninoshvili (born Egnate Ingoroqva; 17 February 1859 – 12 May 1894) was a Georgian writer.
Ninoshvili was born in a poor peasant family in Kela village, Guria region in western Georgia.He studied at the Ozurgeti seminary but was expelled following a student protest. He then worked as a school teacher, telegraphist, typesetter, in a refinery and in a mine. For a brief period, he studied in Montpellier, France.His literary career started in 1887
Ninoshvili died of tuberculosis in 1894, aged 35. His historical novel The Guria Uprising, about the 1841 peasant rebellion in Guria, was published posthumously in 1902. The first Georgian feature film, Kristine (1916-1918) was based on his short story of the same name. In 1948, a house that he had lived in at Archeuli village, Guria was converted into a museum.

In Gurian kitchen like Imeretian, dishes are common with the meat of birds, various spinaches with plants as well as corn flour and traditional mchadi. Gurians for frying mchadi and fish put leaves of grapes or nut tree, this gives dishes special taste. Gurian fried chicken with rice and Sacivi of fish is worth noting. Nuts and hazelnuts are widely used in dishes.
Gurian pie – khachapuri of half moon shape, in which is boiled and cut egg.
Gurian iafofkha – baked mass of soya flour, chopped nuts, and mixed egg.
Janjukha – churchkhela with nuts.
